STALBRIDGE LIBRARY LANDMARK – CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF COMMUNITY SUCCESS
On Sunday 1st July, 36 volunteers and Friends of Stalbridge Community Library gathered at the Hub@Stalbridge to mark five successful years of running the Library. A celebration cake, cream teas and ‘bubbly’ all helped to make the occasion one to remember.
The new Chairman of the Library Management Group, Margaret Jackson welcomed all those present, introduced the members of the Management Group and then asked the outgoing Chairman, Barry Russell, to say a few words on how the Library in its present form came about. In February 2013, following the withdrawal of funding by Dorset County Council, Stalbridge Town Council entered into an agreement with DCC, to provide a Community Managed Library Service ‘managed independently of but supported by DCC.’ Since then, a remarkable team of volunteers have risen to the challenge, and with the support of a Dorset Library Service officer, have battled with the technology provided by the DLS, and kept up with all of the legislation that is required – no mean feat! Barry thanked all the volunteers, without whom there would be no Library.
Barry, who is continuing in his role as volunteer, was presented with a case of wine as a token of appreciation of all his hard work during his time as Chairman and his wife Ann was given a bouquet of flowers for her understanding and support
A quite stunning cake as shown above was then cut by Barry and Tim Lee, (Chairman of the Friends group) and bubbly was served
The Community Library provides access to books and reading, participation in the Summer Reading Challenge, south west reading activities and hosts social events such as Author Talks. There is also a space for people to work or study, with free use of computers
A warm welcome awaits everyone at Stalbridge Community Library, open 20 hours each week, over a range of times to suit everyone, so why not pop in and meet the volunteers, who will be more than happy to introduce you to the wide variety of books, DVDs and magazines, both in stock or available to order
